As we recently announced, PMI SWOC is now a partner with INTERAlliance of Greater Cincinnati. We are proud to announce that our chapter will be joining INTERAlliance as one of the sites for an upcoming IT Careers Camps Program.
For the fifth year, the INTERalliance is running its IT Careers Camps program at UC (hosted by the IS Department of the College of Business), NKU (hosted by the College of Informatics), and Miami University, Oxford (hosted by the School of Engineering and Applied Science). Twenty students per week live in the dormitories and compete on four teams of five students, with each team sponsored and branded by a company (e.g., "Team P&G" versus "Team Cintas" versus "Team Kroger", etc.). The students go to a different sponsor site each morning and compete in problem-solving "Olympics", with the events built around real-world business challenges encountered by the host sponsor company. The students have lunch with the IT management team at the company and discuss career opportunities in IT at that firm, and then return to the host university to work on their capstone project – the "Communication Enhancer Inventors Competition". In this weeklong design contest, the teams attempt to conceive and design a new device, methodology, or tool leveraging information technology that can help people with disabilities to better communicate. On Friday each week, the teams present their designs to a panel of judges from the local agency supporting disabled clients and the sponsors.
The registration fee per student is $250, which covers the costs associated with dormitory and evening meals/expenses for the week. The seven one-week sessions for 2010 include four sessions at UC the weeks of 7/12, 7/19, 7/26, and 8/2; two sessions at Miami the weeks of 7/12 and 7/26, and one session at NKU the week of 7/19. Students must be able to stay the enire week at the university, including overnights Monday through Thursday, returning home with parents after the Awards Ceremonies Friday afternoon. Students nominate themselves with co-sponsoring by a faculty member from their school. The universities select the students to fill the slots in their programs.
