How to Register PDUs

PMPs must accrue a minimum of 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) every three years. PMPs must also comply with the PMP Code of Professional Conduct to maintain certification status.

The certification / CCR cycle begins the day you pass the exam and/or multi-rater assessment (for PgMP credential holders) and ends on the same date three years later.

More information is available on PMI's Web Site. See how to maintain your credential on the PMI Web site. For Southwest Ohio PMI Chapter PDU Information - Category Three events, see:

  • List of PDUs for Chapter events
  • Letter explaining how the Event Number is derived
  • How to register your chapter meeting PDUs

For the PMP Professional Development Activities Reporting Form, the activity sponsor for these events is Southwest Ohio Chapter PMI, P.O. Box 42107, Cincinnati, OH 45242.

Ways to Earn PDUs

If you hold the PMP®, PgMP®, PMI-SP®, or PMI- RMP® credential(s), you are required to adhere to the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program, which supports ongoing professional development through education and giving back to the profession.

Fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities to earn professional development units (PDUs) toward maintaining your credential(s).

While courses and seminars are ideal way to stay up-to-date with  project management best practices, many other activities occurring in your daily professional life may count toward PDUs, too.

Visit the PMI.org website to find out more.

Maintaining Your Credential

Congratulations on earning your PMI Certification!

Now that you are a credential holder, you need to adhere to PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) program. To follow the program,  participate in professional development activities to earn professional development units (PDUs) and maintain your credential. To learn more about the program, what are PDUs, how to earn and claim them, as well as step-by-step instructions on how to renew your certification, watch the CCR Video.

Every credential requires a specific amount of PDUs per three year certification cycle. Since the requirements are different for each one, visit their respective pages to find out more:

Article: Understanding the PDU Category Structure and Policies

If you are a certified Project Management Professional (PMP)®, then you know that the acronym PDU stands for Professional Development Unit. Every PMP needs to earn 60 PDUs every 3 years in order to keep his or her certification. Why? The idea behind PDUs is simple: the Project Management Institute (PMI) wants every PMP to continuously learn. Just like doctors or pilots who have to take classes regularly and practice new skills in order to keep their license, PMI wants credential holders to learn new project management skills so that we can be the best project managers possible.

This article is based on an interview with Rory McCorkle, Product Manager Credentials, from PMI, and you can listen to the full interview for free at The Project Management Podcast website: http://bit.ly/pmpodcast204.

The rules around PDUs changed in March 2011, but many people are still confused about the new structure. Let’s look at the main changes. To read the full article by Cornelius Fichtner, PMP, click here.
